Hi, I’m Becky Mitchener, and I’ve been a dedicated Parkinson’s Nurse for over 11 years.
I specialise in supporting people living with Parkinson’s and related conditions such as Corticobasal Degeneration, Multiple System Atrophy, and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.
After years of working in Eastbourne, Hailsham, and Seaford, I now focus on the High Weald and Havens areas, covering towns like Peacehaven, Newhaven, Uckfield, and Crowborough, as well as their surrounding communities.
What Does a Parkinson’s Nurse Do?
My role revolves around caring for individuals with Parkinson’s and their families. From those recently diagnosed to those with advanced Parkinson’s, I aim to provide support, guidance, and practical help. This includes:
Medication Management: I review current medications, adjust dosages, and suggest new treatments to help manage symptoms effectively. While I don’t prescribe medications, I work closely with your GP and consultants to make recommendations.
Assessments: I assess many aspects of your health, including mobility, speech, swallowing, sleep, cognition, and overall independence. Together, we address any concerns impacting your quality of life.
Education and Advice: Living with Parkinson’s can feel overwhelming, but I’m here to help you and your family understand the condition and adapt to its challenges.
Coordinating Support: I work closely with other healthcare professionals, including physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, and social care teams. If needed, I can connect you to additional services for tailored support.
How Do I Access This Service?
To access my services, you’ll need a confirmed diagnosis of Parkinson’s or an associated condition. Referrals can come from consultants, GPs, or allied health professionals. Whether through clinic appointments in Newhaven, Uckfield, or Crowborough Hospital, or home visits for housebound patients, I aim to make my care accessible and effective for everyone.
What Can You Expect?
Every patient is reviewed at least once every six months, but you’ll have open access to me whenever you need additional support. My goal is to help you maintain as much independence as possible while navigating the challenges of Parkinson’s.
Support for Carers
Caring for someone with Parkinson’s can be incredibly demanding. I’m here to provide practical advice, emotional support, and resources to help carers feel confident and supported in their role.
If you’re living with Parkinson’s or caring for someone who is, please know that you’re not alone. The journey may be challenging, but with the right support and resources, it’s possible to manage and thrive.
